Controversial Porcupines
Wang Haozhu and Pan Mei breed porcupines in the southern province of Guangdong – but not now. The virus that paralyzes the world most likely came from the Chinese wilderness. The Beijing government is under intense pressure to amend a rather weak animal protection law to better protect the country’s biodiversity – and allow wild animals to remain in the wild. Wang and Pan are confused. As part of the anti-poverty strategy, they were encouraged to breed porcupines to increase their income. Now it’s likely going to be prohibited.
